Do you see it?
Yeah, a new cover, custom made by a local canvas shop plus a side “drape” on the left *ahem* PORT side to keep the sun from fading the blue all day every day. It seems crazy, but restoring color into gelcoat is expensive and/or time consuming, but putting a cover on is easy. Same for the interior, it gets ruined by both sun and water in large enough quantities of either. So keeping it properly covered can extend the life of, well, everything, and it’s worth doing right.
I also had a literal pile of cash burning a hole in my sock drawer so I figured it was a good time to get this done right. But damn, it bit into my mountain bike fund a little more than I would have liked.
Gotta keep that color!

Pretty boat. When is the Oppo wakeboarding meet?

You don’t want it to look like my RatBoat? Oh the swim deck is brand new I built it over the winter.

Love it. Is that an ‘89? I spent a ton of time in one of those, same color even. It really hooked me on Nautiques.
Swim deck looks beautiful. I wish mine was teak; I know you can get them (or build one) but ... priorities.

It hurt me in the wallet for sure but I will literally sleep better knowing the boat is properly covered.

What do you do for bottom paint on that boat, or does it not stay wet ?

It’s actually a 1985 with a 454, It was built for SeaWorld and they put the 1989 graphics on it to update it. We talked with one of the engineers that was at Correct C
raft at the time. The interior was missing when we got it so it has an 87 deluxe interior.Floors, Stringers, Engine, Trans and interior have all been completly restored we haven’t messed with the gel goat at all. We keep saying this winter but it doesn’t get done. So we just call it the rat boat or I guess Patina Rod.

That’s a beautiful boat. The other day, my son mentioned getting a boat, but I told him that mom wasn’t interested. I told her the story, and she actually surprised me by saying she wouldn’t mind having a boat. Queue the Craigslist search!

Fresh water, no bottom paint. Stays in the water from May-October usually

Feel free to post here with whatever you’re looking at. I have opinions if you want them.

Wow, that must be some cold water to keep growth at bay. Our boat runs an ablative anti-fouling paint over an e poxy barrier coat to keep algae under control living in the (fresh) water from early March to November in Southern NM . This time of year, there would be considerable slime buildup after a 2-3 days and a completely fouled bottom that after a week without some biocide containing copper paint on the bottom. After 2-3 weeks, uncoated gel coat will require sanding to remove the harder growth that forms .

And here I thought you were talking about the pain of filling the gas tank...

I have 0 interest in boats, but I know a thing or two about protecting assets.
Also, hey, nice looking boat. Congrats on having money to swap between a boat maintenance fund and a mountain bike fund. I know how much those cost , so you’re doing well for yourself, it seems! (This is not sarcasm, I’m genuinely happy for you.)

You can also drive the ‘61 Ford, no charge haha

It’s pretty rare that I say this about a craigslist boat, but that one looks excellent. Price is pretty much spot on if it were to lake test well. I’m curious if the stringers have been redone but if the floor is solid, it’s still a $5-6k boat anyway.

Wow! I guess it’s just different water chemistry and/or biology then. The water gets up around 75-80 by the end of summer usually. But no one uses bottom paint up here - in fact, if I see bottom paint on a boat it usually means it came from the ocean or brackish waters.
I will say, we have to wash the bottoms in the fall. There’s plenty of stuff on there, and depending on where the boat lives on the lake we see different colors and levels of growth, etc. But boats that live out on the open parts of the lake and that get used regularly aren’t too bad. A hot water pressure washer takes off 90% of whatever’s on there.

Nah, it takes more than 5 minutes to fill the tank haha. I try not to look at the price. It’s not a huge expense in the grand scheme of things, so you really can’t think about it. If you’re worried about gas consumption, an inboard boat is not for you haha. I spent most of last weekend on my father-in-law’s 13' boston whaler with a 25hp outboard and we probably burned 1 gallon of gas. It was fantastic. I think I burn two gallons of gas just driving to the marina to fill up on gas, and that’s not a joke.

Thanks! I did a very responsible thing and sold one of our cars simply because we didn’t need it. I loved it, but it was just one more mouth to feed. So I had some extra money from that sale, and now the ongoing savings of one less thing to maintain. I don’t plan to ever sell the boat and I can’t stand not to take good care of such a nice thing. So we prioritized. The thing that we all enjoy, and that we enjoy sharing with our friends and family (the boat) won priority over an extra car.
Cheers

Thanks! I more or less searched for 10 years for that boat. I had another one that I liked, but was always looking for, well, the one I have now. I just couldn’t afford them when they were new, by a long shot. Finally this one appeared on local Craigslist and not only did it have all the features I wanted, it was the best year of the best model of the best brand, AND it was a great color combination that I’d never actually seen before, or since. I went to look at it and the previous owner took really good care of it. He and I got along instantly and I left with a handshake deal. Anyway, more than you asked but I am still excited about this boat 3 years later.

Interesting. Around here any boat that lives in the water (which is relatively few, since covered marina slips are expensive a and private ownership of land along lakes really isn’t a thing here) is bottom painted. The temperatures probably have something to do with it also. Water temperature is already close to 80, and it will remain above 70 until well into October.

Nice boat. I am taking the little ripper out tomorrow. $700 into the build so far. 60 hp.

That is awesome!
It didn’t take me as long, but I stumbled into an E39 M5, Le Mans Blue on Caramel. I know how that feels. It feels fucking amazing lol

Tell me more about that. I saw something similar the other day and assumed it was a motorcycle engine but... how is the prop driven? Is it a twist throttle or a thumb lever? 60hp on that must SCREAM also. That thing looks amazing.

650 tiger shark engine and jet. I used the stock steering and controls from the tiger shark. Thumb throttle. GPS says 40. It accelerates like a rocket. I mainly built it to go up rivers. It’s a fun toy made out of a boring pwc.

Ah, that makes sense. Great build! 40 is fast for a little boat, and I bet that’s a blast on a river especially
